Listed under the Natura 2000 network, the National park of Schinias - Marathon is a landscape of unimaginable natural beauty and importance covering a total surface of 14 hectares. On the one side, the marine area of Marathon Bay, the wetlands, the Cynosoura peninsula, the Drakonera Hill, the pine-cone forest and the area of the Makaria spring and on the other, the Olympic rowing centre (infrastructure), the housing associations’ developments, scattered private residencies (housing), miscellaneous tourism and recreational constructions but also fields and farms (agricultural use) constitute a rather interesting contradiction. For almost a century, the development of Schinias through urbanisation and infrastructural constructions, intensive agricultural exploitation, non-friendly environmental methods in combination with the lack of an integrated programme for the protection of its vulnerable ecosystem have led to the significant degradation of Schinias’ ecological aspects. Building upon a rigorous mapping analysis and setting the focus on the wetlands, the strategy centers upon the restoration of the aquafer, which binds Schinias’ landscape together. Water is understood as a tool and a means for providing solutions, unlocking the ecological potentials of Schinias. <img width="2500" height="1766" width_o="2500" height_o="1766" Attica, GR Savvas Kakalis, Alexandros Tzoutsas palus intensio : wetlands in tension The proposed strategy addresses Schinias as a constantly changing landscape due to its hydrological texture. Following the in-depth investigation and mapping of the relationships and dynamics between the different areas and zones of the National Park in relation to time, it became apparent that the existence of such a large body of water is the main reason for the gradual yet continuous change within the landscape. Palus intensio : wetlands in tension envisions new mechanisms for regulating the quantity and quality of water proportionally in space and time in order to increase the intensity with which the landscape is altering. Furthermore, these devices are placed strategically in the grounds of the National Park in order to solve the existing problems of the aquifer while protecting the ecosystem altogether. Located 60 km southeast of Athens, 74 km from Piraeus port and 7km south of cape Sounion. The area owns its development to great deposits of valuable minerals such as silver, lead, arsenic, litharge, minio et cetera. The first indications of mining activity in the area can be traced back to 3600 B.C. with the greatest burst of mining activities placed during 6th and 5th century B.C. The present town was developed as a company town by Roux Serpieri - Fressynet C.E. in 1865 based on contemporary neoclassical urban plans with a rectangular road grid, boulevards and groves. In order for the export capacity to be increased the natural port of Ergastiria was enlarged and a railway connection with Athens was established. Being well connected and located in an a privileged position, Lavrion emerged as a significant industrial town attracting also textile and chemical industries. As a result of the 1980’s deindustrialization, social and economical problems emerged. The shutting down of the railway connection, the gradual outdating of the port and the heavily contamination of the area caused the majority of the 9.000 headstrong population to become unemployed. With the mapping research focused on the in depth analysis of the historic and topographic features contributing to the connectivity and the industrial development of the area, the strategy aims upon the reestablishment of the superlocal, national and international connection lines. The underlying goal is to restore Lavrion as the industrial hub it once was. Getting into smaller scale, the strategy envisions a connection between all the heterogenous elements forming Lavrion’s identity. The rigorous mapping research focused on the in-depth analysis of the topography and geomorphological features of the existing coastal and island landscapes, the production processes, the historic Karountzou From the outset, the research investigation on Charakas and Patroklos focused upon the history of the island and the various plans for development, primarily wilful high-end large scale resorts that were disrespectful of the beauty, serenity and environmental importance of the site. The spectacular location, despite its proximity to Athens offers unique tranquillity and peacefulness, beauty of nature, magnificent views and dramatic panoramas, all of which were determinant factors for the brief’s articulation and the development of the design strategy. The masterplan prescribes a retreat and meditation centre on the island, which, besides a docking platform and a small reception, includes residential cells, spaces and platforms for meditation, sports’ fields, scattered in a park and interconnected by a network of peaceful routes and rest points. Is(n)land is designed as a self-sustainable community, which will produce and consume its own material and energy throughout the year. Αίολος) is located in close vicinity to Cape Sounion in a unique natural setting. It is a small and exclusive coastal community of second homes, built in the early 1990’s for the members of a lawyers’ housing association. The implemented masterplan prescribed only one type of buildings: semi-detached single storey houses with pitched roofs and fenced-off gardens. Nevertheless due to the southwest sloping topography, all houses enjoy a spectacular panorama and sunset. A dense grid of streets reassures vehicular access everywhere. Basic communal facilities are arranged along a cascading central spine: a tennis court, a playground and a visitors’ parking yet without any commercial or public facilities. All in all, Aeolus is a prime example of a gated community with little respect or appreciation to the landscape it forms part. Ανάβυσσος) is a coastal suburban settlement, 34km southeast of Athens, on the foothills of Olympus hill (487m). Since 2011, Anavyssos constitutes a municipal unit of Saronikos, with a permanent population of 6.202 inhabitants and a total surface of 14.478km2. The National Road ‘EO91’ (Athinon - Souniou Ave.) bisects Anavyssos and the coast. Its main landscape features are the peninsula of Aghios Nikolaos and the Alykes (Gr. Αλυκές, salt marshes). The peninsula is named after the chapel of Aghios Nikolaos (Gr. Άγιος Νικόλαος, St. Nicholas), protector of the seas and sailors according to the Christian Orthodox religion. Due to its geographic location and topography, Aghios Nikolaos served for centuries as a natural fortification and a safe haven. In 1922, following the Asia Minor crisis, refugees settled in Anavyssos, on state provided land. Until their official closure in 1969, the salt marshes were the main income resource for the settlers. Till recently, various temporary activities such as music festivals and the Rally Acropolis took place in Anavyssos, nevertheless without any planning, proper infrastructure or support facilities. All in all, strong pressures for tourism development along the coast, the common practice of building beyond the urban plan, the inadequacy of environmental protection mechanisms and the lack of knowledge with regards to the wetland, have resulted into its significant degradation. Since 2014, with the provisions of law N. 4277/2014, Anavyssos is under protection primarily banning construction and road development, land clearing or filling. <img width="5000" height="3792" Daskalopoulou , Aikaterina Ritsoni The primary aim of the project is to reunite people with the sea and the coast through the creation of a metropolitan park that extends along the coast from the GNTO School to the Old Phokaia’s port. The reactivation of the salt marshes and the enhancement of a fully accessible coastal front, required the deviation of the Athinon-Souniou Avenue along the site’s northern borders. The main programmatic anchors of the park development are the New Tourism School, a Centre for Marine and Environmental Research, a public Beach and Water Sports Club. The Centres will offer a variety of amenities including hotel and camping, spa, thalassotherapy, salt milling infrastructures, environmental laboratories, educational facilities, organized beaches and water sports. Many of these services will be housed in renovated existing facilities, currently out of use. Once completed in 1964, the innovative complex consisted of one hundred bungalows, a restaurant, and an organised beach with changing rooms, sports facilities, shops and bars. The innovative, modernist complex situated around a spectacular protected cove was a cosmopolitan getaway in close proximity to Athens’ centre. For over a decade nevertheless the hotel section and sports fields are abandoned and inaccessible from the privately leased and partly functioning beach and restaurant facilities. The multi-scalar mapping research unveils the diachronic transformations of the complex with regards to planning, programme and use, human occupation and landscape evolution, eventually projecting Φάληρο), situated on the east coast of the Phalerum Bay, is a municipality of Attica since 1942. Palaio Phaleron covers a surface of 4.8km2 and has a coastline of 4km. Due to its vicinity to Athens (approximately 9km) Phaleron’s importance goes back to Antiquity as the City’s first port. For centuries, the area used to be primarily farmland but gradually became urbanised in the first quarter of the 20th century. Today, Phaleron is densely built, with tall polykatoikias (Gr. πολυκατοικία, residential building) and considered an up-scale Athenian suburb. An important environmental element of the area is the Pikrodafni stream (Gr. Ρέμα Πικροδάφνης), which springs from Hymettus mountain. Pikrodafni with a total length of 9,3km is one of the few remaining urban streams of Attica, which despite being subject to significant anthropogenic pressures -including uncontrolled building constructions and human interventions, illegal rubbish disposal and the destruction of its riparian zone- still retains some of its important hydro-morphological and biological features constituting a The master plan can be implemented in phases, initiating with the restoration of the riverbed along the higher section of the Pikrodafni stream through the planting of purifying plants and the installation of water cleaning mechanisms (Vouliagmenis ave. - Aghiou Demetriou ave.). The purified water will gradually be used for irrigation creating thus an inviting vegetated area. At a lower section, a system of promenades will be running along and across the stream in the form of pathways, crossings, bridges, platforms and steps, interconnecting various structures and areas for resting and recreation while reorganizing pedestrian and vehicular flows.At the ‘isle’ section, the scheme foresees the creation of a multipurpose community centre, through the selective demolition and transformation of existing structures and buildings. At the lowest section of the stream, at its estuary, the park meets the spirit and vitality of the existing beach and waterfront promenade. All in all, the ecological transformation of a degraded natural reserve will eventually render it a destination and landmark for Attica. As the site constitutes for centuries the primary passage to Salamis island, its name originates from the Greek word ‘πέρασμα’ (pɛ.ɾa.zma), which means ‘passage’. Perama became a community in the 1920s, following the Asia Minor crisis and the settlement of refugees in the area. By 1925 and as the port of Piraeus was gaining importance as a major transportation and commercial hub, the State enforced all small scale shipyards to relocate between Drapetsona and Perama. Following the Second World War and the expansion of the Greek merchant fleet, the increasing demand for shipbuilding facilities and industries for the maintenance, repair and building of vessels resulted into the emergence of small to medium scale -mostly private- enterprises along Perama’s coastal front. In 1936, a commercial train track was constructed to connect Perama with the Piraeus’ harbour facilities. Unfortunately the track was damaged during World War II and was never reused. Today, beyond the disused train tracks, the linear private industrial zone of shipyards, the Piraeus Port Authority facilities and the ETEKA oil reservoirs, constitute an unsurpassable boundary between the city and the sea. For almost a century, different social groups and cultures have been continuously coexisting and contesting in Perama, thus it could be characterised as heterotopic. <img width="5000" height="3536" the basis of the Atlas’ analysis, it became apparent that the main economic factor of Perama -the shipyards- in the near future will become obsolete. Beyond a mere regeneration, the proposed strategy aims at redefining Perama’s waterfront without losing its social and cultural identity. The new Perama waterfront will become a world class centre accessible to the wide public incorporating state-of-the-art shipbuilding infrastructure, in combination with academic and research facilities and a recreation and athletic centre. The regained accessibility to the seafront, in combination with the multiplicity of new programmes, will render Perama a desirable destination for living and recreation, an alternative getaway from the suffocating centres of Attica. The new coastal development of Perama will benefit from a direct and quick access to Pireaus and Athens via the reactivated railway connection. The scheme foresees the development of intermodal passenger facilities combining a hydroplane airport, a bus and train terminals and a marina. Eleusis features a number of territories that coexist, overlap or even collide. The coastline is occupied mainly by industries and freight port infrastructure. The city has little connection to the sea, while expanding on the mainland, among the logistic and manufacturing facilities of the plain. At the same time, the gulf hosts a great number of vessels, both active and inactive. The last century of industrial development in both Eleusis and the gulf has left a huge territorial and ecological imprint; occupation of vast areas in proximity to the sea, heavy infrastructure, pollution, degradation and interventions in the terrain and the coast. Having dozens of industries rendered inert, the ongoing deindustrialization poses questions about the management of all this material and land. Gallopoulos, 1989, "Strategies for manufacturing", Scientific American The exhaustion of oil deposits, which marks the end of the industrial profile of the gulf deriving from the present, creates three issues; first, the vast oil refinery infrastructure and land, among others, fall at the state of inertia, also ever more vessels and especially oil tankers arrive the Eleusis ship graveyard or the gulf, in order to be sold to the developing countries’ shipbreaking yards some time. Given that half of the country’s oil refineries are situated in the area, its contribution after oil to the whole energy system is minimized. Therefore, there is a huge amount of inert material in the locus [both land and sea], creating the need for management and activating. Collecting and combining these facts, the strategy prescribes a new sustainable industrial eco-system, reclaiming the former industrial land and material as its new territory, reactivating the industrial railway of Eleusis and using the material that constantly arrives at the gulf as its resource. A new green shipbreaking yard is created in the former Eleusis oil refinery location, setting in operation a circular system of relations that provides services to vessels during their whole lifespan and then treating the end-of-life vessels material for exporting it after process, or creating new vessels. The gulf is anticipated to become an important nautical hub for the whole Mediterranean Sea and perform as a spectacle for the city of Eleusis. At the same time, the Aspropyrgos oil refinery is transformed into an algae bio-refinery.
