Karathona is a bay located at the east part of the city of Nafplion and belongs to the municipality of Argolis. The area has a coastline of 3 km and is about 5 km far from the center of Nafplion. Karathona has been awarded with the ‘Blue Flag’ for its excellent quality waters and is considered as one of the most popular and crowded beaches of Argolis during the summer months. From the past, besides plage, it was used as a military base. However, the main use of the land was pasture and the main activity in the sea was fishing. From time to time, free camps were allowed and many proposals were made for the development of the whole area. So far, there has been no progress in any potential development, as a result the area is not being properly utilized. Μajor areas of Κarathona are property of the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT) and the Organization of Touristic Education and Training (OTEK).
Coastalfest
Even though the beach of Karathona is considered one of the most famous and beautiful beaches of Nafplion, the whole area remains completely undeveloped and neglected. The purpose of the research was to investigate the area's specifications in order to create a space appropriate for cultural events and thus to release the center of Nafplion to a great extent. A large and suitable space for Festivals. And what does a festival need? Spaces for hospitality, shops, places for various activities and sports, parks and of course many stages. Operations that will turn the whole area of Karathona not only into a simple summer tourist resort but in a huge interactive fest.
